General Responsibilities on the A-Boat. Starting at the front and moving back.

First person Upwind
  • Main responsibility jib trim
  • Calling wind and waves
  • Rolling on tacks
Spinnaker Set
  • Hoist
  • Helping on Tack line if needed
  • Drop jib (light air only)
  • Ease out haul
  • Make sure vang tension is correct
  • Make sure that Cunningham is off
Down Wind
  • Boat balance
  • Drop coil spin halyard
  • Drop coil tack line
  • Make sure spin sheet is up on jib luff for jibe
  • Pull spin around on jibes
Take Down
  • Jib up (light air only)
  • Set out haul
  • Boards as necessary (Note different depending on take down)
  • Release halyard and tack line
  • Trim Jib
Second Person Upwind
  • Board down
  • Main responsibility Vang, cunningham and boards up
  • Helps with traveler
  • Light air balance
  • Big person on roll tacks
  • Calls shots for jib trimmer
Spinnaker Set
  • Tack line
  • Sets boards
  • Make sure cunningham is off and vang is set.
Down Wind
  • Works with first person to set boards on jibes
  • Boat balance
  • Watches for traffic, buoys and breeze
Take Down
  • Responsible for front _ of spin on take down
  • Traveler, vang and cunningham
  • Board down
Third Person Upwind
  • Board up
  • Traveler
  • Help with fine tune on runner
Spinnaker Set
  • Clears lines from around spin bag
  • Gets spin out of bag
  • Pre-feeds spin tack out
Down Wind
  • Trims spin on gybe
  • Helps fly with fourth person in big air
  • Drop coils spin sheets before each gybe
Take Down
  • Pulls sheet in on take down and brings in leach of spin, helps stuff in bag
Fourth Person Upwind
  • Back stays
  • Calls tactics
  • Responsible for boat balance and speed
Spinnaker Set
  • Pulls pole out
  • Flies spin out of bag
Down Wind
  • Flies spin, speed
Take Down
  • Pole in
  • Helps stuff spin
Fifth Person Upwind
  • Main trim, race coarse position, tactics

Upwind boat balance

A system needs to be developed and each boat will be different. Generally in light air the driver needs to go up to the high side first, then the mainsail trimmer. If there is enough air move the jib person up next. Move person three up next, then person two and then the fourth person.

The set

  • First/Second person Make sure that vang is set for rounding
  • Fourth person Pole out
  • Third person Goes in to get spin out of bag and start to sneak tack out, makes sure halyard is clear
  • Second person Sneaks tack from rail
  • First person Eases jib and goes up on deck for hoist
  • Driver Turns down (Calls for hoist calls for tack out once hoist is 2/3 of the way up)
  • First person Hoists
  • Third person Makes sure spin stays out of water on set
  • Second person Waits for call and then pulls tack line around to mark
  • Fourth person Flies spin on set
  • Third person Makes sure fine tune on backstay is off
  • First person checks rig to make sure that it is not inverted
  • First/Second person Out haul in
  • First/Second person Vang set
  • First/Second person Cunningham off
  • First person Drops jib if wind is light
  • First person Makes sure spin sheet is up on jib luff for gybe
  • All Balance boat

Note: make sure todrop coil lines tack line, halyard and spin sheets.

Boat balance down wind

Establish a system of who moves first. Fourth person flying spin up first. Third person up next. Driver up next. Mainsail trimmer, Fifth person up. First person up. And finally second person up.

Mexican take down: jibe take down (Port side in)

  • First person Pulls jib up if down
  • First person Drops starboard board
  • First/second person Outhaul on
  • Second/third person Center traveler light to medium air, heavy air have down
  • Third person Opens spin bag
  • Fourth person Over trims port sheet
  • Fifth person/Main Releases backstay
  • Sixth person/Driver Gybes boat
  • Fourth/fifth person Sets new back stay on gybe
  • First person Drops halyard
  • Second person Pull foot and body of sail down
  • Third person Gets main part of spin during take down and stuffs spin
  • First person Tack line off
  • First person Jib trim
  • Fifth person Main trim on round up
  • Fourth person Pole in
  • Second person Port board up
  • All Hike and clean up boat

Windward take down: jibe take down (Port side in)

  • First person Pulls jib up if down
  • First person Gets the rest of the starboard board down
  • First/second person Out haul on
  • Second/third person Center traveler light to medium air, heavy air have down
  • Third person Opens spin bag
  • Sixth person / driver Calls for take down
  • Second Third and Fourth Start pulling spin around
  • First person Blows tack line as soon as they start pulling spin around
  • Fourth person Releases pole at the same time as tack is blown
  • First person Drops halyard as soon as spin is most of the way around
  • Second person Pull foot and body of sail down
  • Third person Gets main part of spin during take down and stuffs spin
  • First person Jib trim
  • Fifth person Main trim on round up
  • All Hike and clean up boat

Leeward Take down AKA Forward T/D

  • First person Pulls jib up if down
  • First/second person Out haul on
  • First person Gets the rest of the starboard board down if there is going to be a gybe after takedown
  • Second/third person Center traveler light to medium air, heavy air have down
  • Third person Opens spin bag
  • Sixth person / driver Calls for take down
  • First person Gets lazy sheet for take down and hands it to the second person
  • Driver Calls for take down
  • First person Blows tack line
  • Fourth person Releases pole at the same time as tack is blown
  • Second person Start pulling spin in via lazy sheet and gathers foot very fast
  • First person Lowers halyard in a controlled manner
  • Second/Third person Pull foot and body of sail down
  • Third person Stuffs spin
  • First person Jib trim
  • Fifth person Main trim on round up
  • All Hike and clean up boat

After each of the roundings get the boat moving and controls set.
